Artist Talk from Tofu, a Top Seller on ACGGOODS

At ACGGOODS, we believe every artist has a unique story behind their creations. To share these journeys with our community, our promotion lead Cynthia sat down for a one-on-one conversation with Tofu, one of the platform’s top-selling artists. In this interview, Tofu reflects on the creative process, the experience of running a store with ACGGOODS, and the lessons learned along the way.

Cynthia: Could you start by introducing yourself to our readers?

Tofu: Hello, my name is Kale or Tofu, I am 22 years old, and I am from the Philippines. I like to draw whatever makes me happy. I try to draw more for my other fandoms, but right now I enjoy doing fanart for Jujutsu Kaisen. I’ve been drawing ever since I can hold a pen, but I started taking it seriously in 2020.

Cynthia: Can you tell us about the works or characters you personally love the most?

Tofu: I mostly draw my two favorite characters there, Gojo Satoru and Ryomen Sukuna. I really adore their characters together. I adore their unique dynamic as rivals, and they always make me happy. I enjoy drawing them in many different kinds of AUs and sharing them publicly. Although they are not a couple, I enjoy the concept of them being one! I also enjoy the popular ship there, which is SatoSugu. Geto Suguru and Gojo Satoru. I really like Gojo Satoru; he was probably one of my first fan art merch… I guess I’ve liked him for five years already!

Cynthia: Would you be open to sharing your social media accounts, so that others can learn from your journey?

Tofu: My social media handles are to00fu on Tumblr, to__0fu on Instagram, and su2kuna on X. I post a lot on my Tumblr, so I recommend that people check it out regularly.

Cynthia: How did you manage to grow such a large fan base?

Tofu: Honestly, I only grew my audience in 2023. It is difficult to attract this many followers, but I believe my secret is to draw whatever actually makes you happy! Share them everywhere, connect with other artists, and, well, practice drawing more. Because that is essentially what I did. It can be frustrating but we must keep going; I did not grow these followers overnight anyway!

Cynthia: What are your thoughts on the sales results you’ve achieved so far?

Tofu: I didn’t anticipate the volume of sales, but I was pleased that so many people purchased my merch. It excites me to create more merch. I hope my items made them happy! Here is my data dashboard

Cynthia: How did you first hear about ACGGOODS?

Tofu: I discovered ACGGoods while scrolling through X, and my good friend , str3wberryy, commented on their post. I’ve been thinking about creating a merch business for months but couldn’t find the proper time, so discovering their new service is like a godsend. I immediately chose to use it because, as I said before, I had been seriously considering launching a merch store. Also, I actually discovered Wooacry through the same friend, and I had no idea they would develop a service like that; it’s an amazing opportunity.

Cynthia: What made you decide to work with us?

Tofu: Yes, I’m busy with work and my medical issues, so using ACGgoods allowed me to focus on my own stuff while they assisted me with design, shipping, managing my online store, and pretty much everything else. I would love to attend a convention, so that will be my next major goal!

Cynthia: ACGGOODS offers a fully managed store model for artists, and you are one of the creators who signed under this model. What would you like to share about this experience?

Tofu: It’s a great option for artists who don’t have much time to run their stores. Essentially, ACGoods manages your store while you provide them with your design. They also offer to handle product selection, pricing, marketing assets, and product photography. So it’s a good opportunity for artists who don’t have the means or, as I mentioned, the time to manage.

Cynthia: How has your overall experience with ACGGOODS been so far?

Tofu: I’ve been running my store for about a month! It hasn’t been long, but it’s been an enjoyable experience. My Sukuna phone selfie photocard is one of the best-selling items. I originally drew it for myself because I simply wanted my own Sukuna photocard in real life; I was delighted that so many others enjoyed the concept as well!

Cynthia: What’s your perspective on product pricing for merchandise?

Tofu: In my opinion, artists should never sell too low. Setting greater prices is preferable to selling lower. After all, art is difficult to create! Prior to the full-management model, I honestly decided my charges based on my skill and people’s budgets. It’s not too high and not too low! I believe I always opt for prices that are balanced.

Cynthia: Among all the merchandise, which product is your personal favorite, or which would you most like to gift to your fans?

Tofu: I’d offer them the Gojo Round Badge or Sukuna since it’s my favorite art, and I truly enjoy how ACGGOODS makes the badges!

Cynthia: What are your thoughts on AI-generated creations?

Tofu: I’m pleased that ACGgoods and Wooacry openly reject this since, in my opinion, AI-generated content has no place in the art industry. While everyone should be free to run a shop, selling AI-generated content is fundamentally stealing from artists, and the content is often soulless. Describing AI as “putting the brush back into the hands of ordinary people” is not quite accurate; I believe anyone can make art without the assistance of AI. I came from a lower-class background, yet it did not prevent me from making art without the use of AI.

Cynthia: Many artists hesitate to take this step because they feel they don’t have enough time. What advice would you give them?

Tofu: I’ve had my fair number of such situations, but the secret is to create an organized plan for it and set a date when you’re actually free to focus on art. Whether it’s after school or work, I attempt to squeeze my plans in! I believe people should just go for it honestly, it was definitely one of the best decisions I have made.

Cynthia: Finally, is there anything you’d like to say to wrap up this interview?

Tofu: I’d probably tell my 2020 self not to quit drawing, even if it seems horrible in their eyes. I’d also like to thank them for pushing through; I doubt I’d have gotten this far without pushing myself. So, thank you 2020 me for everything.

Here are my 2020 artworks! I had roughly 2k followers on Instagram while I had less than a thousand on twitter!

Tofu: And here are my current works!
